Here are some shots taken in three different locations in Patagonia, all the way from San Martin in the north, down to El Calafate in the south. The venue we fished in the El Calafate region is close to the famed Lago Strobel. It’s a new operation called Kooi Noom (we will be taking guests there from Jan 2015). It has similar stillwater fishing (just ridiculous the size of those rainbows) as well as two river systems, one being a spring creek which holds fish up to 25inches, which as you can imagine is where I spent most of my time. The landscape is dramatic and harsh down in the south, a stark contrast from what you see further north where some of the areas in the Andes were almost like rain forests. Fish of the trip was a 29inch brown on the most hideous terrestrial dry fly you have ever seen!

(Gerhard is the CEO of Flycastaway, a fly fishing travel outfitter and long time friend of mine. When I first published Hunting Trout in 2003 he joined me on my country-wide road trip in my old truck selling books to stores during the day and doing book signings at night. At the time I said my back was giving me some trouble, so he ended up carrying all the boxes. Now he asks me please to warn him if I plan to bring out another book just so he can make a timely escape to some far flung fishing destination when I do the road trip! Tom Sutcliffe.)
