‘A Chronology of South African Flies’ – a new book from Peter Brigg and Ed Herbst awaits us!

Peter Brigg writes:

About 3 years ago the idea of a follow-up book to ‘Call of the Stream’ started whirling around in my brain. The ideas eventually consolidated into the direction of recording fly patterns that have a distinct local flavor, unique in design, technique applied or materials used; flies that could be called, indigenous. I slowly started gathering information and writing the opening chapter to help solidify the direction of the content. As it became clearer I decided that what better way than to get the originators of these flies, to in their own words write a short piece about its creation. It turns out that many have interesting stories behind them.

I also found myself communicating with our fountain of knowledge Ed Herbst on a regular basis especially for the history of some of the older patterns. Then, some two years ago, sitting around our camp one evening high in the mountains, I said to Stephen Boshoff, do you think Ed would be likely to accept an invitation to co-author the book with me? He liked the idea and the rest is history, Ed accepted and we have been working together on the project since then.

The text has been completed and proof-read.  I’m at present busy with the photography and my daughter Cathy and her husband Shane both accomplished graphic designers living in LA in the States, will do the design and layout. We have already more or less settled on the formats for these. There is still a way to go, but we are hoping that if all goes according to plan, we will be ready to publish later this year.

It is an exciting, sometimes daunting but rewarding project which from a personal point of view, I hope will eventually be complimentary to my first book, ‘Call of the Stream’.
