Piet Beyers’s delightful new book

Waaraan ek Dink As ek Treug Dink -Visvangheriinneringe, is a sumptuous 500 page book printed in full colour. It is the story of Piet Beyer’s life-long love affair with fishing, but in relating the story as it unfolds from his youth, he relates also in part the story of his life, his family and his friends and a big part of the history and evolution of fishing on the southern Cape coast. Gradually his fishing grounds expand, from his familiar, loved and remote Fransmanshoek , to waters in Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, Russia, England and beyond. The book is written in Afrikaans with a few chapters in English written by friends. But what I most enjoyed was Piet’s own writing.  It is gentle and thoughtfully constructed prose and in years to come this book will be Africana.

When I wrote this review in September 2010 there were only a limited number of copies available through the author and those quickly sold out. Since then Piet has written to say:

As you know the first edition was not commercially available. I recently had a second edition printed. It was delivered last week and is now available in Cape Town at The Book Lounge, Clarkes and Select Books and also in Stellenbosch and Hermanus. In due course hopefully it will also be available in other cities andtowns. And of course directly from me.

Quite a nice Christmas gift I think.
