AUCTION OF ED HERBST RODS AND REELS

Thursday, 21 July 2011 04:49

A once-off auction of small stream rods and reels belonging to Ed Herbst

To fly fishers the value in these items is multifold.

Firstly, they belong to Ed Herbst, South Africa’s premier “delicate” fly fishermen.

Secondly, they were commissioned by Ed to meet specific conditions. As he learnt more, he asked for these to be built, some by international masters, others by talented local makers and builders.

Thirdly, they represent, in many cases, “cutting-edge” thinking for their time, whether international or local. Don Philips of the USA, for example, was the foremost exponent of boron rods when first developed.

Then, there are currently only two Stephen Boshoff centre-axis rods in circulation today.
