FROM GERHARD LAUBSCHER on HATCHING VAAL RIVER CADDISFLIES

Says Gerhard:

Last week Thursday Timothy BabichRyan Hammond and I went to the Vaal River for a quick venue scout before our clinic on Saturday. Being on the river we thought we might as well stay and fish the evening rise...and to our surprise there were caddis flies hatching everywhere. This was great as we hadn't seen a caddied hatch of this magnitude on the Vaal in many seasons! We caught a bunch of fish on dry flies, mostly around the 30cm mark. Great fun.

On Friday morning as I drove to the office there were still a few bugs flying around my car and I thought I'd use the opportunity to photograph the little critters. The light was really bad and the windows very dirty (as you'll see), but I got a couple of interesting shots, if only I could have done this shoot in bright sunlight!

I spent the weekend at the vise studying the images and coming up with some new CDC patterns. I’ll have to wait until mid October when I'm back from the Seychelles to test them.
