AGAINST THE FLOW - a documentary DVD on the Orange River
Against The Flow is by no means your traditional fly-fishing video. It is not recommended for those who are hypnotized by minute after minute of fish cranking, or anyone looking for fly-fishing instruction. Point in case, the only nymph talked about in any detail is a small town cheerleader. It is the story of a road trip across the interior of South Africa following the Orange River. Setting out, Clive Will (my nephew) and his team looked to learn about and highlight some of the concerns facing water generally and this river particularly, but the team do fish the river for yellowfish, barbel, trout, mudfish and carp. As a group their fishing skills range from beginner to enthusiast; guests from novices to professionals. The video is an eclectic body or work, informative and entertaining, suitable for viewers 13 years and over (according to the SABC censorship board) and directed by Clive Will who has won Cannes Festival gold and bronze medal awards for his work as a freelance commercial film director. BACK OF DVD COVER:
Against The Flow is a road trip featuring four friends tracking the course of South Africa's longest river, 2300 km long, that over time has been known variously as the Orange, Groot, Gariep, Senqu or simply the Great River. This odyssey begins, at the mouth of the river in the stark coastal desert of the Northern Cape. It ends sixty-five days later at the source in the verdant highlands of Lesotho. From white water rafting to fly-fishing, the river is intimately engaged. Tracking westerly across South Africa's thirst lands the DVDs present a rich collage of towns, histories, landscapes and experiences. Characters ranging from San people to a small town cheerleader, tell stories of mystical man-eating river snakes, elusive diamond eating yellow fish and events that have shaped the lives of those living alongside this mighty waterway.
