A DAY ON THE COLDBROOK STREAM
The Coldbrook is a tiny tributary of the Sterkspruit, a major fly stream near the village of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape Highlands. I must have fished it half a dozen or so times over the years and it’s never disappointed. It also has a head of the most colourful and beautifully speckled wild rainbows you’ll ever hope to see.
Two years back I fished the upper section where it gets pretty thin, but I never mind that because the fishing just gets more interesting. I was with my pals Billy de Jong and Philip Hills who were new to the Coldbrook so I let them do most of the fishing and focussed on my photography, though the one occasion I had a run to myself I took a really decent trout that appeared out of a tiny slot in solid bedrock and took a yellow DDD.
Anyway, here’s the picture essay of our day on the upper Coldbrook.
Believe it ot not but this is where we start fishing this stream. It looks too tiny to amount to anything at all.
